MARIE ANTOINETTE The Petit Hameau De La Reine

Most people are unaware of this Magical place. As an Artist/Jewelry Designer, I'm asked quite often where my inspiration comes from. Well, here is one example..... The Petit hameau de la Reine ("Little hamlet of the Queen") was the rustic retreat built for Marie Antoinette, sited in the private section of the park of Versailles, in a secluded spot. The petit hameau was small and rustic but in essence a ersatz farm (or ferme ornee) meant to evoke a peasant village in Normandy, built on the far side of a landscaped pond. Created in 1783, to designs of the Queen's favored architect, Richard Mique, the hamlet was complete with farmhouse, dairy, and mill. Here, it was said, the Queen and her attendants would dress as shepherdesses and milkmaids.
